European Documentation Centre

The European Documentation Centre (EDC) network was established in 1963 by the European Commission to promote education and research on European integration and to serve as a bridge between the European institutions and the academic community.

The EDC of the University of Pisa, hosted by the Department of Law, has been a reference point for European studies and dissemination since its foundation. It was initially established under the Scientific Coordination of Professor Antonio M. Calamia, who led its activities from the outset, and has been coordinated by Prof. Simone Marinai since 2024.

Over the years, EDCs have expanded and redefined their role, becoming increasingly open to society at large and acting as information hubs at the local level on issues related to the European Union and its policies.

The main goals of the EDCs are to:

  • Support universities in promoting and strengthening teaching and research on European integration;
  • Facilitate public access – including for non-academic audiences – to EU sources, publications, and official documentation;
  • Contribute to the public debate on European affairs by collaborating with other European information networks, as well as with university bodies and local organisations.

The EDC regularly organises and participates in workshops, seminars, and round tables for both academic audiences and the wider public, and takes part in national and European projects aimed at fostering knowledge and dialogue on the European Union.
